Hagay
Dreaming
A six-act technofantasia created by new-media artist Shu Lea Cheang with Truku artist and practising shaman Dondon Hounwn. Drawing on a Truku legend of a hunter who dreams inside a hollow tree, the performance moves through ritual, dance, song, laser and motion capture to imagine a future rooted in Gaya, a principle of living that understands all beings as connected.
Presented in Tate Modern’s South Tank from 13–15 March 2025, the world premiere gathered performers and audience inside a shifting forest of light, weaving ancestral knowledge and digital systems into the same physical space.
My performance film translates the scale, darkness and movement of the live work into a cinematic record, holding onto both the intimacy of the performers and the vastness of the Tanks.
